It is a little more challenging than just dropping the pan once you get the cat removed. If it is a manual transmission, you have to open some ports on the pan to access the rear (of engine) pan bolts. I normally have to really pry the engine over to allow room for the pan to drop down enough to remove it. It is possible to do without removing the subframe.
It may help to remove the 18 mm nut on the pass side enging mount to gain some flex room for removing the pan.
If you're removing the pan for sludge reasons, you may want to run a cleaner through the engine to get the majority of the sludge into the pan before removal. BG has some good products to help.
As for the exhaust studs, use a lot of penetrating oil to help make the job easier. If you break a stud on the turbo, the cold day will be much longer than what you expected.
Regards,
Jason
