To check shocks, bounce the car at each corner. When you stop bouncing, the car should stop bouncing immediately. Any additional bounces point to dead shocks. You can also visually inspect the shocks for oil leaks. If the rear of the car kicks sideways over sharp bumps it's also a sign that the rear shocks are worn.
Sounds like you value a smooth ride over sharp handling. The only replacement option for you is either stock or KYB replacements. Bilstein or Koni will provide a harder ride.
When it comes to making the choice, if you are happy with the ride and handling of your car, and don't like the ride on a base or Aero model (I found the base too soft and upgraded to Aero, the rear is still too soft), I think you're furthest ahead leaving it as-is unless you have a shock that's obviously leaking.
