The DI will detect the difference in combustion and pull back on the boost. So, you CAN run the 87 octane, but will not get as much power. I too have also noticed a drop in MPG when running 87. It seemed that I didnt save any money by running 87 (this was in the winter BTW).
I cant run 87 in warm/hot weather (01 Aero). It starts to knock and has a noticible lack of performance.
