Thanks BobC for your write-up of the SID repair.
I just did mine - followed you progression exactly. Removed and opened the SID per instructions on Saab 9-5 website that came up using your specified google search. Used the ballpoint pen trick ...three times...results not good - probably worse. I went to the iron with nothing to lose, just like you.
I had trouble believing that it needed to be so hot as the cotton setting. So I tried a low setting - no improvement. Tried a Rayon setting, a little hotter, still no improvement. Tried a medium setting, and altered how I was ironing the ribbon - an improvement, but not much.
Second to last attempt went all out to your advice - put it up to a high cotton setting, first held the iron on the ribbon and pressed hard for about 30 seconds. Much improved. Final attempt, cotton high setting, held the iron on the ribbon for about 30 seconds, and then using the pointy tip of the iron, I ran it back and forth from one side to the other while pressing pretty hard, for about another minute. I didn't touch the board for about 5 minutes after that - letting it cool completely. 100% fixed (for now).
Great news is - now that I've done it I'll be able to do it again with very little work if necessary. I thought I'd add information to your post so others who are trying the fix know how long I applied heat for - and to confirm that the cotton setting works.
