I replaced my fuel pump this weekend and , thanks to this site, was prepared with the metal holddown in your photo. My fuel barb was barely held in by the warped retainer on old pump- thankfully, it never blew.
It's insane that such a critical retainer is engineered so poorly. As my car ages, I'm just amazed at how many important parts flat out fail 'cuz they weren't designed to last past the lease - heater valve, fuel pump retainer, DIC, CPS, just about every plastic holddown/clip in the engine compartment, ABS module, SID, so on......
My father in law's 5 series BMW is falling apart at a similar rate - ECU dies because flimsy plastic cover warps and lets rainwater in, radiator inlet just "snaps", fan flies off at speed, SID, security system, engine seals, a million other "little" things, etc. All before 70K. With the various fluids that always seem to be trailing the car, it's the Ultimate Leaking Machine. Similarly obscene parts cost a la Saab.
Although lots of other parts have failed, virtually anything branded Bosch seems to fail at twice the rate of a similar OEM part on my Asian "appliance". Bosch makes branded parts for Asian makes, but I will spend 2x as much for a Nippondenso/Hitachi/Toyo part (many of which now are made in USA) because it will last! Is it German (or Slovakian/Mexican/wherever Bosch finds cheap labor) parts?
Maybe the culprit w/ Saab is bottom-line GM sourcing, since I doubt Bosch makes the fuel pump, or at least the plastic parts. It's distressing, though.
