Serpentine belt install question...

Hi, I'm planning on changing the serpentine belt (and idler pully) this weekend for the first time on my 9-5; 4cyl, 59,000 miles. I have a couple of noob questions:
1. I've read a reference about using a "wedge" between the engine and frame. What exactly is is for? Does it lift the engine or just support it? Can I just use a small jack under the engine instead to support it?
2. Do you need to support the engine with the wedge or jack before you take off the top engine mount?
Thanks in advance.
