I have seen 6/32 as minimum tread depth for snows... Tread depth of 6/32's is approximately 1/2 of original tread amount. Mine were at that point when I installed them in November after only two season's of use. I recently replaced them after failing to climb my sister-in-law's driveway three weeks ago with minimum snow and ice cover.
I drive over 10,000 miles per year on my snow tires, most of it at 75mph on clear expressways which probably explains my two year limit on usable life. Plus, my recently replaced set was driven to Florida in the winter of 2004/2005 which certainly depleted their life considerably. I buy snow tires for the few days per year when I am driving on snowy and icey surfaces during my 100 mile daily commute to/from work.
I just got a set of Dunlop Winter Sport M3's in the P195/65R15 size from Tire Rack at a very attractive price.
