It is a great engine.. and part of what makes it work so well is that the 9-5 is fairly light: A Saab 9-5 SC is about 3700 lbs, an Audi A6 is 4167, for comparison.
What worries me about the next evolution of the 9-5 is that the market is so stuck on AWD and 6 cylinder engines, that the new (whenever it arrives) 9-5 might loose what makes it competitive and different. Once you toss a guzzling V6 and heavy all wheel drive into a new, inevitably wider, heavier body style, I suspect the effeciency virtues we LOVE about the current model will be a thing of the past.
I'd say that it couldn't hurt to be in touch with Saab corporate to let them know that a lot of us don't want or need AWD nor V6 engines. I was always perfectly happy with my old 2001 185hp 9-5.. and see no real benefit even to the 2.3 with 250hp in my '06. Long live the 4cyl turbo engine!
