My wife's 2000 9-5 (with 90k miles) recently started making grinding noises from behind the radio when switching between the ACC vents (floor/front/windshield). The air would only come out from the front vents regardless of the selection.
I tried to recalibrate the ACC just to get more grinding noise and the code 13 (air distribution flap jammed or loose - i.e. the stepper motor cannot trigger the limit switch).
Today I got the motor out(removed two covers below the dash on the passenger side and the glovebox, then the motor/gearbox assembly). I could see the motor shaft spin but the output of the gearbox would not move. Also I could move the gearbox output shaft by hand and the motor shaft would not spin. After separating the two I found that the motor shaft slid out about 2-3 mm out of the motor (see the pic) and no longer engages a gear in the gearbox. I pressed the shaft back in a vise, assembled everything back, recalibrated the ACC and everything now works and no errors.
Labor: 1 hour
Part: $0
Happy wife: priceless.
