Fist some history: Saab came out with a V6 in the mid 90's that wasn't very good. Needed a new timing belt every 30,000 miles. Saab dropped it after a few embarrassing years. The V6 on the 9-5 is a completely different engine then that mid-90's V6. But some indies still think back to that mid-90's V6 and declare all Saab V6's are awful. Not true.
I've seen it said on this board more than once by Saab dlr mechanics that the rate of warranty repair on the 9-5 V6's is less than that of the I4's. That aside, there seem to be alot of satisfied people driving all 3 engine types, so if it were me, I'd feel free to choose the one that suits you best.
I'd also consider that perhaps your indie doesn't know anything about the 9-5 V6 and doesn't want to learn and therefore you might consider finding another.
