broken blend door shaft - how to remove?

I finally got around to taking apart the driver's side heater vent and servomotor (not the easiest work for a guy 6'3" and 230 pounds!) after having the ACC throw the dreaded 08 code at me throughout the winter.
The stop arm fell out in two pieces right off the bat, just from loosening the first two screws on the vent elbow. Thinking I just got away with just a $20 fix I rushed over the the neighborhood SAAB parts guy and ordered a new stop arm.
Then I proceeded to remove the servomotor (2 screws) and finally the third and final vent elbow screw. After popping off the vent elbow, I grabbed a small mirror to look up into the inside of the housing and yup, the yellow shaft was split in two. Looks like I'll be ordering the aluminum repair part from thesaabsite after all. (look for the SAAB plastic stop arm on ebay soon!)
But here's my question: is there any special trick to removing the piece of the yellow shart arm that sticks out of the housing and integrates into the servo motor shaft? You can't just pull it out as there is a solid molded circular ring on the inside - I've tried pushing it in so I can retrieve it from the inside, but while I can wiggle and spin the external end, it doesn't seem to want to push on through.
