Not that it helps you out of your predicament, but I had almost exactly the same experience in Savannah, GA a little over a year ago. It was the turbo in my case.
My girlfriend and I were driving from NY to visit her sister in Jacksonville, FL. I had noticed some blue smoke from the exhaust leaving a rest stop near Richmond, VA, but we were past halfway and so decided to press ahead. The turbo would behave as long as I held a steady throttle, but on or off it rattled. I managed to coax it as far as the SC-GA line when I got boxed in by an RV and a semi. The turbo went catastrophically at that point and we got to spend the night in the Hardee, SC Days Inn.
Found a great indie shop in Savannah, Certified Import Repair, and had the car towed there. We picked up a rental and drove on to Jacksonville. They had the car done in three days, ready for us to pick up on our way back north.
Good luck finding a shop.
