Major oil blow out - frayed belt - huge mess! 2000 Aero

Okay I've got some issues here.
About halfway into my 2 hr journey tonight, I got a CEL and shortly after, sporadic, blinking engine oil light. Pulled over immediately, then came the <!> light and so on. Opened the hood, and found oil all over the lower pass. side firewall, belt area, starter, etc. The whole underbody was drenched in sprayed oil. The belt itself was slightly frayed, and it threw tiny shards all over the wet oil (tar and feather sort of a thing). So this SUCKS.
Could it be some major failure of the PCV vent? (I hope I don't sound stupid, but there's a hole in the back of the crankcase that I've never noticed and it sure seems like it should be covered in some way.... or is this the vent itself??)
Any other thoughts, ideas? It's too dark to delve into it further, looks like my weekend just filled up.
Thanks and take care!
Kelly M
