Look at it this way: If this were an Audi, it would require complete disassembly of the car to replace the similar unit. ;-) My first SID started losing a few pixels at 30k, so I had that covered by warranty in mid-'02. The second one just started losing pixels a month or two ago. Big deal. The rest of the car's been quite stellar, relability-wise.

As for the hot iron fix, it works, it's easy and it's free. Take it apart, medium heat setting on the iron (no steam, no starch, please). 10-20 seconds rubbing the hot iron on back and forth on the ribbon cable, where it attaches to the PC board. Reassemble and reinstall. Good as new! I just ironed mine a couple nights ago with 100% success.
