Odd acceleration stutter

99 9-5 lpt automatic, 132k miles. Getting on the highway on a long, fairly steep uphill ramp (and thus with fairly hard acceleration), I felt a repeated but intermittent sharp stutter. It felt as though the engine were missing, though more violently than just a single cylinder missing. The car did continue to accelerate, though not as well as normally, and smoothed out perfectly once I got on the highway and maintained cruising speed. I attempted to replicate the behavior by accelerating hard up another hill, but while acceleration felt a bit weak and slightly uneven, it did not stutter.
I did note a loud power steering moan as I executed a three-point turn immediately before this occurred, but I doubt this is related. The power steering does moan occasionally on this car. Fluid level is correct.
I have a couple of thoughts as to what could have caused the acceleration stutter, and I do have a lot a mechanical experience, though not much on Saabs or turbos. Rather than predispose anyone to a conclusion, I'd like to hear what the educated collective thinks might be causing it and then determine my course of action.
Thanks for your assistance.
