Hello--looking for some advice from the pros on this forum.
I purchased my '04 wagon 2 years ago as a CPO car. It has only 36K miles on it, and is still under warranty. My husband and I both LOVE this vehicle. Comfortable, quiet, economical, beautiful, practical--with no mechanical issues in the 2 years we've been driving it. But we're having an issue with the vehicle, and I'm looking for some advice on how to handle it.
When the car is cold, and has been sitting for a day or two, it does not want to start. It shudders, shakes, sputters, and generally takes 3 or 4 attempts to start. Outside air temp doesn't seem to be a factor, as this problem has been persisting for about 10 or 12 months now. Once we have "ignition", the car rides beautifully--no issues with stalling. And the car restarts just fine so long as the engine is warm.
We've had it to the dealer twice. First time was about 6 months ago, and they claimed they couldn't replicate the problem. We brought it back in yesterday (primarily for the safety recall, but this issue too), and when we went to pick the car up they said there was nothing they could do. Without performing any diagnostic work, they've attributed the issue to seasonal fuel changes, with variations in the ethanol level in the 93 octane that is distributed here in the northeast (NH).
The service manager showed me an internal memo written June 12, 2007, by Rich Miller that starts "We are attempting to identify the seasonal hard starting issues that seem to PLAGUE us every spring and fall." It goes on to say that the Swedes/GM Powertrain won't creat a "fix" unless the dealers can gather and submit 5 years worth of detailed statistics that support the problem.
The questions are extremely specific and I find it highly doubtful that the dealers could realistically respond with this type of data. So, I'm not hopeful that there's a fix coming anytime soon. The local service manager seemed pretty frustrated at the lack of support from Saab.
Can anyone on this Forum suggest another way to perhaps elevate this issue within Saab? Any Saab engineers out there working on this problem yet?
