Hmm... With the age and mileage of your car, it's the perfect scenario for turbo failure. Buuut, turbo failure usually makes BLUE smoke when you start it. Is it the 4-cyl or V6? Check your oil and coolant to make sure there's no oil in the coolant and no coolant in the oil - you could have a small head gasket leak or loose head bolts. If stuff looks normal I wouldn't worry too much. I have a 2001 V6 that blows blue smoke when you start it because of the turbo. Other than it being a little embarrassing and having to keep an eye on the oil level, it's not really all that bad for the car. If it goes on long enough it could damage the catalytic converter though.
