A bit of closure for those who have been following my previous threads. I replaced the fuel pump this morning. This, at least over the course of the test drive, seemed to resolve the hesitation on acceleration I had been experiencing.

When I removed the pressure line from the pump housing, I noticed that it was dry. The car had not been run in about 48 hours, but there's no way that all the fuel should have drained out of the line in that short a period of time. The return line had fuel in it.

The job was fairly straightforward, thanks in part to the experiences posted here. The 4" shelf bracket as retaining ring removal tool was particularly helpful. I modified it slightly by bending the tips (where it contacts the retaining ring) down about 45 deg each, so they contacted the ring squarely, and grinding a small notch in the leading edge of each tip, so it locked in on the ring. Then I welded a 17mm nut on top so I could use a socket. Worked perfectly.

The fuel line inside the tank was a pain, as expected. I cut off the piece that was on the fuel pump. I took a short piece of submersible rubber fuel line (slightly oversized) and pushed the original line inside it, then slipped it down on the new pump as far as I could and added a clamp.

It always freaks me out a little when I am reminded that there are exposed electrical connection inside the fuel tank. The insulation on the wires to the pump was pulled a little bit on either end of the plastic block that they run through, exposing a bit of wire, but this shouldn't be a problem as there are other exposed electrical connections in there as well by design. I cleaned off the resistor track for the gauge while I was in there.

The end result was that acceleration seemed stronger and more even than it had lately, with no sign of hesitation even under WOT. It will take a few days of driving to confirm that my gas mileage has returned to proper levels, but I expect it will. Let's hope this is the end of it.
