PCV check valve versions

Hi All!
The OEM Hella brand PCV check valve on my 01 V6 broke off at the nipple, so I replaced it yesterday with one from the dealer [came in an official Saab Cars USA parts bag]. Teh OEM valve was grey/white and much smaller in diameter than the new all white version. Parts tech said this part replaced the old version.
The original valve's nipple broke off on the side of the valve that's away from teh throttle body. I discovered it while investigating a yellow check engine light because of the hissing sound made, sucking sound actually. The car started and ran fine with the hose disconnected from that side of the valve.
I did a temp repair w/ duct tape and the check engine light went out. I don't know how long this condition existed, as my wife drives this car. I just happened to be driving it Sunday.
When I replaced the valve, I was careful to align the flow indicator arrow correctly. I noticed that when I pulled of the hose to simulate the prior condition, the engine stumbled and stopped running.
So my question[s]-
Why would the car run fine with the hose disconnected with the old valve but not with teh new valve?
Do I have the wrong valve?
Do I actually have it in backwards [arrow is pointing to TB]?
Am I overthinking this thing?
