Firt off, a disclaimer: I've loved the 9-5 since participating in an "Saab owners' clinic" at the 1997 SOC - it ruined me for 9000s. I expect to keep my '02 Aero Wagon for at least another 5/50K, perhaps longer. That said:
With its engine modified again and again and finally tweaked into being finniky about oil quality and change intervals, eager to seep oil out the head gasket (and getting a head gasket to last the life of the engine itself being an accomplishment that took Saab decades)
With a platform that's a contorted last-generation Vectra with too little rear seat room, with seats front seats crammed against the car center leaving a 10 inch thick "B" pillar that, absent a non-FMVSS-conforming wide angle driver's side mirror, dangerously blocks vision, no side-curtain airbags
With a rear suspension that eagerly sags out to tire-eating camber settings
With handling properties that the 9-3SS shows belongs to a past century
It's pretty clear to me that the time for replacing this model is long since past.
