a little or drain the whole coolant reservoir.
It's almost like the washer fluid check valve, the rubber diaphragm would eventually turn gooey and starts to leak. I think the 2002-2003 year cars are due regardless of miles.
A bad coolant bypass valve leak probably isn't going to drain all coolant out at once. The valve sits right below the coolant reservoir so anything in the reservoir will drain out if the valve leaks. The upper radiator hose is above the level of the valve so I guess if you keep driving on a hot day, you will continue to leak coolant. I think you will get a warning from the SID before you lose more coolant and overheat the engine.
Maybe you want to buy the bypass valve and the hose clamp pliers and take them with you. It's really not that bad a job doing it even on the road after the engine cools down. Just carry a gallon or two of water with you 8-).
