The noise from a fuel pump (if/when you can hear it) should be nearly consistent over all operating conditions.
If you really suspect the pump, change it now on your own terms, location and time schedule - not out on the road somewhere.
The "fuel pump assembly" consists of the pump, a 'bucket' that it sits in, a screen and the fuel level sensor. Unless you are having serious issues with the fuel gauge, the only thing that needs to be replaced is the pump itself. While this takes more patience and time than effort, the $400+ you will save by installing the $100 pump only buys a lot of patience. There is a great DIY (with pictures) on a pump R&R posted seven or so months ago. A search of the site will find it.
