Except for a few low-ball "Linear" wagons, most of which were ordered by the dealers with Premium Package that all but eliminated the price advantage, the only reason for having a linear wagon in the first place, go figure. But I digress...
'04 also features the updated PCV system, reducing the chances of sludge build up, and of course the Arc wagon has the more durable Mitsu turbo. If you can swing a few extra bucks, I'd look there rather than the '03, or consider an '03 Aero.
Driven "normally" any of the cars with the 5-speed should shift smoothly and almost imperceptably, if a little sluggishly. Pushing the "swift" button on the shifter makes the car feel a lot more lively, but shift should still be smooth and almost imperceptable.
The 5-speed a/t takes a special fluid that is least expensive at Toyota dealers - ask for "T-4" fluid. It's a little under $5 a quart list price, and some Toyota (or Lexus) dealers give you a discount for case lots. They say 3.5 quarts for a drain-and-fill, but mine always takes the full 4 quarts. I change every 10,000 miles, but then I tow my CV to Florida every autumn (and back North every spring). I think every 30K is probably OK for normal driving.
Other than that, if you are still looking at the 2003 ... what they said. Also, the first thing you should do to it if you buy one of them is install the latest PCV update. It's not hard to do. Especially if you change the belt and pulleys first.
