your descriptoin of the problem points towards a bad master cylinder.

a leaking booster is not unheard of on these cars, but is often given away by a hissing sound when you operate the brakes. (alternatively it could manifest as a hissing sound all the time that stops or changes when you operate the brakes)

from what you say there is no reason to suspect the booster. Then again he is there and can see and listen in person. you could (and should) ask him why he suspects the booster.
