Saab Blue coolant and dissatisfaction with G-05... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Tue, 7 Aug 2007 04:03:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 2000 9-5 came from the factory with Saab Blue coolant, the G-48 formula, which is no longer sold directly to consumers by Zerex and the other manufacturers. I have drained and re-filled my coolant twice in 7+ years of ownership, and will need to do again when I replace my waterpump.
The new G-05 formula, or Mercedes coolant, is said to be fully compatible with G-48 and I have a bottle in my garage with the other parts needed for the upcoming waterpump job.
I recently replaced the heater by-pass valve and needed coolant to top off the system upon completion. I used some of the G-05 coolant and discovered a problem/inconvenience with this product. The Zerex G-05 (and Mercedes too I believe) is a pale yellow color. The color becomes paler yet when diluted 50% with water, and is not visible when looking through the milky plastic walls of the coolant resevoir! The small amount of new coolant I added mixed with the existing Saab Blue within a day and the problem vanished, but may become a major inconvenience if used for a "drain and re-fill", and would definitely be a major inconvenience if used for a "flush and fill"!
Thanks to a posting by Anders in June on the NG900 board, I found the P/N for the Saab Blue coolant which is still available from Saab at the Dealerships (although some apparently don't/won't carry it). I also found that it is available from eEuroparts, search by the P/N 0268177.
End of this story is that: (1) the G-05 and Mercedes coolants are apparently safe to use with (or in place of) the original Saab Blue coolant, but the pale color will make checking coolant level more difficult; and (2) the Saab Blue coolant is still available at a competitive price.
Thanks to Anders again!
