We are on our 3rd 9-5 wagon, our 13th SAAB. We were quite concerned when the hatchback design was dropped with the 9-5, since we'd been SAAB 5-door owners since their inception in the 99. But we need not have worried. Through two-strokes, 99s, 900s, 9000s- the 9-5 is the best SAAB ever, and an incredibly versatile car in its own right, as well as being a great value against the competition.
It's also one of the few cases I can think of where I believe that the wagon version of a particular model is not only more utilitarian than the sedan, but also more æsthetically pleasing. Our present car, an '04 9-5 Arc Wagon, 2.3T w/MT, is a CPO car we bought with only 21K on it, and we're very pleased with it. Plenty of power in a car with lots of interior room, with good handling and brakes, and which will get 32mpg all day at 75 mph.
As for the V-6, I disagree with the previous opinions in this thread. Our first test-drive in a 9-5 was in a V-6, and we were not impressed. The power gains are marginal, and at the expense of adding 250 more pounds to the front end of a FWD vehicle that's already got a front weight bias. So power's a wash, with a net degradation in handling, with a higher price tag to buy and a timing belt to change. I'm still looking for a virtue in the SAAB V6- and not finding one. And I don't accept the lack of sludge as a virtue; if the oil in the I-4 is changed with a premium synthetic every 5K (I do my own changes, and use only Mobil 1 0W-40), you will NOT have a sludge problem.
