Oil discussions are always interesting on this site. When I bought my 2003 9-5, I did what I always do and read the owners manual. It recommended 5W30 and that is what I used. The ACEA A3/B3 standard didn't mean a lot to me since only my Saabs even mentioned it, and despite living in Germany for several years, I had no knowledge of it and it seamed rather unimportant. I went with Mobil 1 full synthetic since that is what I prefer in my turbos. I've owned a turbocharged car of some sort since 1987 and never encountered the problems that some naysayers liked to mention. I did frequent oil changes and used a quality oil, which meant I usually got 150,000 miles out of the cars before I sold them for a newer car. My 9-5 has used 5W30 for the past 30,000 miles with no sign of any oil problems. There is no sludge (I checked) probably due to the use of a quality full synthetic, changing the oil every 5,000 miles, and I do a lot of long distance driving with the car. The 9-5 does little local driving where sludge buildup is typically an issue. Additionally, the oil is rarely stressed in the US in the same way it would be in Europe, Germany specifically, where I used to sustain more RPM where the ACEA A3/B3 rating would make more of a difference. I switched to Mobil 1 0W40 in my 9-5 this week as a result of this discussion which raised my oil awareness for which I am grateful. So I tip a quart in thanks!
