My cabin fan had been acting up, running intermitantly, and then not at all.
As per the groups experience I expected short brushes to be the problem.
The brushes were short, and I installed a slightly undersized pair. But, I was unable to remove the blower from the car. I had to solder in the new brushes while still in the car, with a buddy holding the motor while I worked.
Well, the undersized brushes did not last long, and have to be replaced with a proper sized set.
I would like to extract the blower and refurbish on the bench but I was completely unable to remove the unit from the cowl. The only way seemed to be by squeezing the blower wheel to get between the windshield and the front of the cowl. I chickened out because I was sure that I would break the plastic squirrelcage If I forced it through that space. I tried to remove the blower from the motor shaft, but was unsuccessful at that also.
Anyone have any suggestions?
BTW I got the wiper arms off with a purpose built tool. I made a small fork, much like a"Ball Joint" fork , from 1/4 inch steel. The fork slot was about 9/16" and the 1 1/2" fingers were ground down to about 1/8 at the tips.
Proper size brushes can be had from Mc Master-Carr. com Part #65705K38.
They are the right thickness (5/16") and wider than necessary. They can be filed or sanded to the right width (.355 inch) and length. Cost less than $20.
