I posted a few days ago asking about possible common sources of V6 engine oil leaks. The usual suspects were mentioned including the oil cooler or the round cover on the front of the block.
Up on the ramps, I investivgated over the weekend by wiping everything dry and then idling the engine and looking for a leak. Right away I could see oil gathering along the bottom of the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) flange every time I tried. I thought it might be dribbling out the aforementioned round cover which is JUST above the CPS. Removing the small bracket between the bottom of the turbo and the block and shining more light in the area revealed the CPS seemed to be the source of the leak.
Upon removal of the CPS, I noticed the o-ring which is intended to seal the sensor in the hole is in a small plastic ring which slides around on the body of the sensor. This ring is not sealed to the sensor itself so I am darned if I know how it is not going to leak sooner or later. I carefully cleaned all the surfaces and put a small bead of black RTV around the sensor base and slid the ring into that and added another layer of RTV. I installed & let things cure for almost 2 hours. I started the engine and saw now more oil leak by the CPS. Today... no smell of burning oil on the exhaust and no new drips on a white panel layed under the car. Success!
BTW, this was not the original CPS but a replacement unit installed last winter.
