2nd Time - Driver Side Carpet Hole

My 1999 9-5 developed a hole in the left corner of the driver side foot well carpet and I let it get past the point of repair. I picked up a decent used replacement carpet piece from EBay, but should have known better and reinforced the backside before putting the replacement piece in. So here it is only a year later and a hole has just started in what must be the same high stress area of the carpet. What's the carpet backing made of - dried Jello??!! Better get to some kind of repair before the hole disintegrates beyond repair. If I can tolerate the "stinks forever" glue known as "GOOP" (AutoGOOP, PlumbingGOOP, ShoeGOOP...All the same glue stuff, just clever repackaging/marketing) I'll try this with some tough nylon netting on the backside. I had successfully used GOOP and a folded and hole punched strip of that indestructible clear plastic package wrap material to reinforce a torn edge of the first carpet when it pulled away from under the door side sill.
Anybody else had the same trouble with the driver's side carpet?
