It will be difficult to do much for 1k (SAABs are expensive right out of the box... performance upgrades can come at a pretty penny). I guess you have to decide what type of performance upgrade you're looking for. Are you looking for better handling? More power? Better braking performance? Start with what you want to accomplish based on what you feel your car is lacking and then decide what you can afford within that category.
A fairly simple, low-cost (relatively speaking), and highly effective upgrade can be replacing the ECU with an upgraded chip to get more horsepower and torque. Understand though that more hp and torque equals faster engine wear and more strain on components. Sometimes chipping can lead to replacement of other more expensive parts to compensate for the power increase (and not just engine parts... shocks, etc will feel the strain of increased power). A new chip will change the way the engine fires, so this can sometimes cause a cascading effect that will affect other areas of the engine. Get a good chip from a reputable company that knows SAABs. Proceed with caution!
The good news is that you can upgrade your car over time... it doesn't have to be an all at once kind of thing.
Keep us posted on what you decide to do! Good Luck!
