Turns out one of the power steering pump bolts had backed-out and got caught in the fanbelt/pulley system. According to the mechanic, the loud scream was most likely the belt slipping and the bolt being bent and sheared apart.

He replaced the bolt and loctited it in. Car now runs fine. There is some damage to the tensioner and pulley system and they are ordering the replacement parts. (It is a great shop...they don't just run down to the dealer and buy them. They go online after hours and search sites,like Europarts and others, to find what they need at a discount. Total bill, so far, is $90.
