I recently obtained a stage II for my 99 V6 with 186k miles (ECU and Rhemus exhaust with SAAB embossed on it). It is in excellent shape, no leaks, great compression, no other problems. It's a "project" car, something to tinker with and something I plan to keep for a while. I knew the existing turbo was bad, it always blew oil so far as to the throttle body, so I installed one that I have had in the garage for about 3 years (which was supposed to be good). I took it to a local turbo shop to get an opinion as to rebuild it or not, and the guy spun the shaft, said it looked good and wouldn't see a need to rebuild it. I also figured since I live in a hotter climate that I'd spring for an upgraded intercooler.
Car sounds great, runs much better, BUT after running it for a couple hundred miles, I figured I'd check the intake tubes to make sure no oil was leaking from the supposedly good turbo. To my dismay, I found a slight, very slight bit of oil coming from the intake side of the turbo into the tube that leads into the intercooler, but it hadn't reached the intercooler. Also, there was a slight leak from the bolt for the turbo's oil return line. I hadn't tightened it enough though. Fixed that.
I have always run saab's semisymthetic in it, until i ran amsoil full synthetic, but recently, about 1200 miles ago switched to dyno to run auto r-x.
Questions are:
Is this a sign the turbo needs rebuilding?
Is it possible to damage the new intercooler with this slight leak?
If so, should I pull the aftermarket intercooler and put the old one back in until I get the issue resolved?
Thanks for any feedback...
