Mike,
I can say for certain that the relay before resoldering prevented both high beam lights from coming on and consequently, preventing the blue high beam signal in the dash to come on. Later problems with a single high beam light I believe were remedied by wiggling the repaired relay. Then again, the frequency with which the bulbs seem to go is confusing my recollection sometimes.
Exactly what brand, model and part number are you talking about as a heavy duty replacement bulb? Generically, it's an H7 type which I believe refers to the base and glass capsule size and configuration. It has to draw the typical 55 watts. I tried a pair of Osram (Sylvania's European partner) brighter bulbs, but they didn't last any longer. Middle age seems to have stolen away some of my night vision, so any bettter lighting is always welcome. With so many aftermarket BS blue tinted lights being touted as superbright anymore, it's difficult to know what to believe. Hopefully we'll get these things figured out...
