A guess.....based upon experience of many Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] (#114) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Herb Hirsch) on Fri, 19 Oct 2007 06:46:53 In Reply to: check engine light, RR, Fri, 19 Oct 2007 01:35:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The most common cause for a sudden failure of the temperature gauge is a failure of the sending unit. It also provides temperature input to the engine computer....hence the check engine light.
If it has failed completely (versus an intermittent failure) diagnosis should be easy. Actual replacement takes 3-10 minutes.
Assuming that the failure is as referenced above, a drive to the dealer shouldn't do any harm. Loss of this input to the computer could degrade performance and gas mileage.
Alternatively, you could easily replace this part yourself. It's located at the end of the head on the driver's side. eEuropart carries the part for $12.13 (OEM), part no. 15393755 under the Engine Electrical category as "Coolant Temp (NTC) Sensor". Note that a few onces of coolant may be lost during the procedure.
