Question on replacing theft alarm batteries

I have the screw apart box, so that was lucky. I got the old batteries out with doing do much damage to the board, I hope. My question is: can I just reheat the original solder and stick the new battery prong in, or should I clean off all the old stuff and start from new. And if I should clean off the old, how do I do it without making a mess or burning myself?
I'm guessing the official answer is clean off the old and use all new solder, but (as you can tell) I'm not an experienced solder, so I'm thinking the less I mess with it, the better my chances. BTW, one battery read 2.98 volts, the other 2.90. Don't know for sure if the batteries were why I was getting the service theft alarm message, but the main battery is new and the alarm batteries are dated May 1999, so it seemed a good guess.
