I too have a new 2007 9-5 Aero, the Anniversary Edition no less. And, the steering buttons do not light up....ever. Thank goodness...AIS is right that moving or flickering light in your periphery is distracting/ agitating. I don't know the science behind this.
However, flickering light in my peripheral field of vision is such a problem that I've done the following.
- disabled the "Shift Up" light on every Saab I've owned. Fortunately, this can now be programmed off on the 9-5 with a Tech II. On my last Saab, a 2000 9-5 Aero I had to dismantle the dash to remove the bulb because the Tech II capability wasn't in place in early 2000. My 9000's before that all had an easy-to-remove jumper under the dash. As a point of information, I know (from conversations I've had with other Saab owners) that I am not alone in this.
- I habitually extinguished candles in restaurants because of the agitation caused by the flickering flame.
