Got too much slack on new timing belt on '99 Saab 9-5

I am trying to install a timing belt kit on my motor for my Saab 9-5 V6. The motor is actually a 2002 Saturn Vue V6(L81) but to my knowledge are vitually the same outside. I did make the mistake of buying the timing kit(pulleys and belt) for the Saab motor and not the Saturn. The markings on the belt line up perfectly with all the markings on the motor. My issue is at the tensioner pulley. There seems to be too much slack. I wonder if I need a shorter belt? I have a feeling it has to do with the improvement they made to the tensioner pulley. I'm guessing I can buy the whole saturn kit(pulleys and belt) but would like to only replace the belt if possible. I also could just use the tensioner pulley plate from the original Vue motor and just swap the two pulleys from the new kit as they seem to orient the belt very differently.
Thanks,
Matt
