My in-laws used the X-Ice on their Camry and Civic for the past few years. I was underwhelmed, the Nokian RSI easily gave my 9-5 more traction than the X-Ice did on packed slushy snow and ice.
Consumer Reports just published a comparison of performance winter tires (H or V rated) in September. Here's a link to the tire list: http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=129160
It might be worth a library trip to check out the actual ratings, since they consider dry, wet, snow, and ice performance separately.
Tirerack.com also has some testing data for the tires they sell:
http://www.tirerack.com/winter/wintertesting.jsp
and they have the CR top-rated winter tire, the Good Year Ultra Grip Performance G3 for like $100 ea which is less than the Nokians.
