Not quite on topic, but I replaced my '00 9-5SE Wagon with an '88 Mercedes-Benz 300TE. Franky, there is ABSOLUTELY NO comparison between the '00 Saab and the 12 years older Mercedes. It is simply a far better engineered vehicle in pretty much every way. It doesn't have the tinsel (SID, heated seats, leather, mega-stereo) that the Saab had, but it has a hewn from rock solidity that Saab could only dream of. It's quieter, rides better, is smoother. This car will run forever with normal maintenance, and I can do ALL of that maintenance myself - no $tealer required. No tech II required. And IMHO, the only car safer to crash in than a Saab is a Mercedes. Even with only one airbag. :-) But, the 300TE cost $10K MORE in '88 than the Saab did in '00, so it darned well better be a great car!
I will also say that I would not touch a NEW Mercedes with someone else's money - too much tinsel, and Germans have NEVER been good at tinsel. Their high point was the end of the w124 series like mine, in '95. Downhill ever since.
But I don't think any rational person can really compare a 9-5 to a current A6 or E350 or BMW 5-series. Not even remotely the same class of car, and far, far cheaper. And 1.5 generations behind them anyway. A 9-5 is a high-line Camry/Accord/Passat competitor at best. Quirky character will get you only so far, hence the $10K discounts and nailed to the showroom floor sales figures.
Great used car bargain though!
