If I recall, you typically have to push two buttons (Def, OFF?) to do the calibration cycle.
What if someone spilled a coffee or a coke (like my wife does occassionally, right under the holder) onto the buttons, causing the contact to stick, and then sending the calibration signal to the control system?
There must be a way to pull the buttons out, clean up the contacts.
The random nature of the problem indicates a connection problem per bobc's answer.
