First, with the last several Saab's I've had I have always disabled the Shift Up indicator. I think it's useless and flickering light bothers my eyes, particularly at night.
It is vacuum-actuated, hence, it would come on later in cold weather because the car works harder (lower vacuum) until it warms up.
I would not use the Shift Up indicator light as a sludge diagnostic tool. If you've been changing the oil and filter every 5K miles or lower mileage, sludge is unlikely.
If you still suspect sludge take off the valve cover, drop the pan, and finally, connect a mechanical oil pressure gauge and measure it.
Alternatively, you could send an oil sample to Oil Medic for analysis; the sample should be taken right before you change the oil. Cost for this service is $25.00 (est.) plus mailing.
