Ignition key difficult to remove - 5 speed manual

My best friend just bought a 2002 9-5 Aero with a 5 speed manual. The issue they are having is that the key will not come out of the ignition unless they pull the shifter firmly down into reverse while pulling on the key at the same time. I dont have much experience with manual saabs, but shouldnt you be able to just put it in reverse and pull out the key without havig to pull the gearshift deeper into reverse? Is there a way to fix this? Its a little irritating. Thanks.
