...Same thing happened to our '86 MB a number of years ago. In our case, chipmunks were the culprits. In late fall they found the under hood area and the rear sub-frame a great place to store acorns for the coming winter. While their, they evidently found the wiring tasty and proceeded to partially chew through the wires to the headlights and the fuel pump (in '86 pumps were outside the tank). The partially severed wires caused all kinds of diagnostic problems and led to a final bill from the dealer of $600.00+. Their was no charge for removing the nuts. In fall, we now place mesh bags filled with moth balls in under-hood areas away from the engine. We've had no problems since.
