Switching synthetic oils to an engine that has some miles on it will usually show increased consumption at first. Sometimes switching brands can do the same. Switching from fosil to synthetic - I would be concerned about seal leakage first and then what is going into the combyuustion chambers The molocules of synthetic are about 1/2 the size of fosil oil almost like Nitrogen filled tires and air filled. Nitrogen is analogous to fosil and air is analogis to synthetic. What is essentially happening is the synthetic is cleaning the inside of your engine, that crud is being burned and causes some smoke I would change filters much sooner than normal because a lot of that crud is circulating in the oil system. I would also change oil after no more than a couple of thousand miles or sooner. If you are still consuming oil you may want to switch to a blended oil for a couple of changes then to full synthetic. Personally, I would not be concerned about the smoke, it is the consumption you should watch. As soon as the engine and turbo cleans out and reseals you will be fine.
The crud is many miles of build up being burned and since it is essentially carbon and ignition by products it will cause a lot more smoke than oil burning. I recently switched one of my tractors to full synthetic and after an initial blue cloud around the property it settled down and seems to run smoother, quieter andstarts easier and I don't notice any greater consumption It had over 1500 hours on it. but there is a leak I need to fix was a small seep now it is a river.
