Few weeks ago the fuel pump died in my 1999 9-5 stn. wagon (115K) when I was traveling out of town. I had the car towed to an independent Saab mechanic (~ 20 year experience) found through this website (thanks). The problem was diagnosed as the fuel pump failure, so the pump was replaced, I picked the car up and drove away. However, at the gas station, where I filled it up, I noticed that the fuel gauge did not show that the tank was full - the indicator pointed above the "3/4" mark and stopped, say, 1/8th of an inch below the upper end of the long solid line. (Before the falure the indicator would go above this point to the short line with the "F" next to it.)
I reported the problem and the fuel pump was replaced yet again. The assumption was that the sending unit in the pump was defective. After the second repair, I got the car back with the fuel tank full. This time the indicator did, indeed, show that the tank was full. (Pointer was at "F" or even above.) I was glad the problem was solved.
However, on subsequent refills the original problem reoccurred. The indicator stops magically just above the "3/4" mark (i.e., below "F"), as if there was a magical obstacle on the dial.
In addition, I noticed that the DTE (distance to empty) value displayed by the trip computer on SID seems to be incorrect, too. Before the failure with freeway driving it would previously show a figure in the 500 mile range (~30 mpg * 18 gal), now it is showing high three hundreds.
Does anyone have an idea what might be the cause of such behavior? Is it some kind of calibration necesary? Is there an easy fix for for the problem?
I feel that I cannot trust my fuel gauge any more.
Thanks, -Alex
