...At Saab's 50th anniversary.

The first model year of the 9-5 is, officially, 1998 ('W' in the VIN). They went on sale in Sweden and other markets late summer or early fall of 1997 as 1998 models. The US didn't get the 9-5 until spring of 1998, IIRC, but as a 1999 model. The V6 was not available immediately (hence quite a few 4-cyl SE models), and the wagon also followed later in the 1999 model year.

The 9000 was originally slated to be produced for the European market alongside the 9-5 for a while, but the astounding success of the 9-5 led Saab to cease production of the 9000 early, after the 1998 model year.
