Realize, the batteries you can buy are not "correct".. 1 Saabers Like This Post! This was just revealed within the two weeks or so. The alarm is built using Sanyo CR17335 batteries with three pin tabs, these are designed to supply high power to the siren, but suffer from a shorter stand-by life (why they fail for us after 5 to 7 years).
The batteries you can buy are Sanyo CR17335SE-FT. They look identical. Infact, the middle numbers (17335) are the diameter and length of the batteries in mm, and the final "-FT" is the specifier for the three pin mounting tabs. The difference is the "SE". All of Sanyo's SE series of batteries are designed for exceptional stand-by life, in excess of 10 years! Sounds great so far.
The problem is the internal construction of the battery. These "SE" batteries are designed to supply low current when called upon, and may not power the siren at all. The only time they would be needed to power the siren is when the car's alarm is activated AND the main battery is either dead or disabled.
The comercially available bateries will fit, they will stop the annoying "Service Theft Alarm" message, they will stop the annoying siren soundings in the middle of the night (at least for a while) caused by the factory batteries reaching the end of their stand-by life.
The commercially available batteries MAY not stop the siren soundings forever, and they MAY not have enough power to sound the siren if ever needed.
A post by Marcin recently detailed installing a battery box under the hood which holds four AA cell lithium batteries, rather than replacing the lithium batteries on the siren circuit board. The AA size lithiums are capable of providing the high power to the siren.
I have the "SE" batteries in my siren. I installed them 16 months ago. Very recently I have had mysterious siren soundings, without the STA message, on Saturdays only while the car is parked in my drive. Strange.
