If you hit anything hard enough to damage your wheel, there is a pretty good chance you also damaged the tire, since it is the tire's job to absorb the impact in the first place. I live in NYC, where the third world road conditions have given me some experience(s).
My wife's old German tank has had two bad pothole experiences and my '02 Aero one. None of them was so serious that it resulted in a damaged wheel rim, but each time I have found a blister about the size of a ping pong ball somewhere on the inner or outer sidewall of the tire involved. It doesn't always leak air or give the steering a funny feeling but included in its potential consequences is a blowout at some inconvenient moment. It happened to my Aero at rush hour on the NJ turnpike one hot and crowded July Friday.
No injury or accident, but the side wall on an otherwise pretty good tire looked as if someone had pulled a bayonet through it. No warning, one second everything was fine at 65 mph, and the next we were driving on our left front wheel rim. Do not try this at home.
So, if you haven't already, take a close look at the tire on that bent wheel. If you see a blister, the tire is unsafe.
