A single test doesn't really tell you much. Here's why: Spectrometers used in oil analysis only see a small range of particle sizes, typical of what you get when a part subject to wear starts to go bad, such as a bearing. Each engine will shave off particles at it's own unique rate. Taking samples over time at uniform intervals will show a fairly even concentration of wear metals. When something starts to go bad, then the concentration of the metals involved increases rapidly.
Blackstone knows the "normal" range of wear metal concentrations for the average engine, not yours. The range is quite large. For example, the iron concentration for a friend's aircraft engine has varied from a low of 5 to a high of 28 ppm, while another engine has run from 7 to 23 ppm. A third engine had a very wide range, had a low of 5 and a high of 48 ppm. If normal for your engine is near the bottom of the range you can have something starting to go bad & it wouldn't show yet. Had you been sampling regularly it would show much sooner, because you would have data for your engine.
The proper use of oil analysis is to sample every time you change the oil. Lastly, oil analysis won't predict catastrophic failure, the sudden breakage of a part. It only helps you identify abnormal wear. BTW, that third engine listed had a cylinder crack. Nothing in the oil samples predicted or showed there was a problem, because an impending crack does not shave off particles and deposit them in the oil.
